Here's our guide to some of the best Mandela Day events and initiatives happening around the city in 2026.

Nelson Mandela Day Events to Celebrate & Support in Pretoria

Every year on 18 July, South Africans honour Nelson Mandela's legacy by dedicating 67 minutes to serving others—one minute for every year he spent fighting for justice, equality and human rights.

Across Pretoria, communities, charities and organisations are once again coming together with events that inspire kindness, connection and hope. Whether you'd like to get active, volunteer your time, support a worthy cause or simply spend the day making a difference, there's an event for everyone.

Here's what's happening around Pretoria this Mandela Day.

Nelson Mandela Remembrance Walk & Run

Join thousands of South Africans at the iconic Union Buildings for one of the country's biggest Mandela Day events. Hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government, the annual Nelson Mandela Remembrance Walk & Run celebrates Madiba's incredible legacy while bringing people together through movement. Participants can choose between a 21.1km half marathon, a 10km run or walk, or a 5km fun run and walk, making it suitable for seasoned runners, families and everyone in between. Whether you're chasing a personal best or simply soaking up the incredible atmosphere, it's a memorable way to honour Mandela's life while spending your 67 minutes with thousands of others.

67 Minutes. One Purpose. Mandela Day Hike

If you'd prefer something a little slower, join Ctrl Alt Deliver for their inspiring 67 Minutes. One Purpose Mandela Day Hike at Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve on Saturday, 18 July. This free, guided 67-minute walk takes place from 08:00 to 09:07 and welcomes participants of all fitness levels.

Rather than a race, it's an opportunity to pause, reflect and give back. Instead of purchasing a ticket, participants are invited to donate any amount, with proceeds helping provide stationery and personal journals for 150 learners at IkamvaYouth Mamelodi. It's a beautiful way to enjoy one of Pretoria's favourite nature reserves while making a meaningful difference.

Thuthukisa Mandela Day Charity Fun Run

Get moving for a good cause with the Thuthukisa Community Initiative Charity Fun Run, taking place on Saturday, 18 July at the Household of Christ in Mooikloof. The morning kicks off with the double 5km route at 06:45, followed by the single 5km run or walk at 07:00, making it perfect whether you're aiming for a personal best or simply enjoying a morning out with family and friends. Every step helps raise funds for Thuthukisa's community initiatives, making this a fun and uplifting way to celebrate Mandela Day while supporting a worthy local cause.

Spend 67 Minutes Helping Animals at Wollies Animal Shelter

Animal lovers can spend Mandela Day giving back to some of Pretoria's most deserving residents at Wollies Animal Shelter in Hesteapark. On Saturday, 18 July, the shelter is inviting the community to spend 67 minutes for animals in need by walking one of their rescue dogs from 08:00, helping clean enclosures from 10:00, or donating much-needed dog and cat food. There'll also be delicious food, sweet treats and refreshments available throughout the morning, making it a wonderful family outing while supporting homeless animals in Pretoria.

Knit Hope with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day

One of South Africa's best-loved Mandela Month initiatives, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day continues to warm hearts—and communities—across the country. Whether you're an experienced knitter or just starting out, you can contribute by knitting blankets, scarves or squares, donating wool and knitting supplies, or sponsoring someone else to knit. Every blanket eventually finds its way to someone who needs a little extra warmth during winter, proving that even the smallest act of kindness can have a lasting impact.

FoodForward SA Mandela Day Packing Event (Worth the Drive)

If you're happy to head through to Johannesburg, the FoodForward SA Mandela Day Packing Event at Gallagher Convention Centre is one of South Africa's biggest volunteer initiatives. Taking place on Friday, 17 July, volunteers spend their 67 minutes packing food that will be distributed to vulnerable communities across the country.

Last year, volunteers packed enough food to provide more than 880,000 meals, and this year the goal is even bigger. It's a fantastic opportunity for businesses, families and groups of friends to roll up their sleeves and make a tangible difference before Mandela Day officially begins.

Whether you're joining thousands at a remembrance walk, hiking in nature, walking a rescue dog or helping feed families in need, every act of kindness contributes to something bigger. Nelson Mandela reminded us that "It is in your hands to make a difference." This Mandela Day, choose an event that speaks to you, gather your friends or family, and turn your 67 minutes into something truly meaningful.
