Women Who Lead: Q&A with Angelique Janse van Rensburg from A’MI Collectif

Lerato Maimela / March 2, 2026

Written by Katrien Pienaar

As International Women’s Day 2026 approaches, the spotlight turns to women in business doing it all: leading, building, and shaping their communities with intention. In Pretoria, Angelique Janse van Rensburg of A’MI Collectif is doing exactly that.

Angelique is building more than a brand: she’s shaping confidence and style. In her own words: “When a woman dresses well, she carries herself differently.” Inspired by her journey, we caught up with her to hear how she’s bringing that vision to life.

Building A’MI Collectif Pretoria: Fashion That Inspires Confidence

Angelique describes herself first as an entrepreneur, wife, and mother, roles that naturally shape how she leads. But fashion, she says, has always been her language. “For me, getting dressed is not superficial, it’s strategic,” she explains. “The way you present yourself influences how you feel, how you think, and how you show up.” That thinking became the foundation of A’MI Collectif’s slogan: “Fashion that inspires confidence.”

From the beginning, she set a personal rule: if she would not proudly wear a piece herself, it would not enter the store. Quality, elegance, and wearability are non-negotiable. “I believe there is no such thing as an unattractive woman,” she says. “Only women who haven’t yet discovered what elevates them. Style is a skill, and when you learn it, everything shifts.” A’MI Collectif is not about chasing trends, it’s about helping women see themselves differently.

Milestone Moments

A key milestone for Angelique was rebranding and repositioning the business to A’MI Collectif (previously Milk & Honey). “That decision required clarity and courage,” she reflects. “It wasn’t simply a new name; it was a shift in identity, standards, and direction.” Another milestone is recognition, a customer saying, “I’ve heard of A’MI” or “I’ve seen your store” signals that the brand is gaining presence and becoming part of the wider conversation.

Navigating Challenges

Growth, however, has not come without obstacles. Retail, Angelique admits, is not for the faint-hearted. “Margins are tight. Trends move fast. Consumer confidence shifts constantly.” Starting without retail experience, she learned everything in real time, from stock control to customer psychology. “That was both intimidating and empowering.”

One of her biggest challenges has been elevating A’MI Collectif into a premium space in a market often drawn to fast-fashion pricing. “It requires educating your customer, patience, and above all, consistency.” Her goal is clear: “I don’t want A’MI Collectif to be popular. I want it to be respected. Respect is built through consistency, humility, and high standards.”

A Brand That Mirrors Her Lifestyle

Spending time in A’MI Collectif and the boutique feels like an extension of Angelique’s lifestyle: clean lines, strong silhouettes, and timeless pieces that command attention quietly. “My buying philosophy is simple: timeless over trendy, quality over quantity, and cost-per-wear over impulse.”

Every piece is considered: will it still look elegant in two or three years? Will it integrate into a capsule wardrobe? Can it be styled multiple ways? If not, it stays out. Her love of minimalism extends beyond fashion; she jokes her home is “50 shades of grey,” structured, balanced, and intentional. That calm discipline carries into the store, making it feel curated and purposeful.

Miss South Africa and Personal Growth

Angelique is currently a semi-finalist for Miss South Africa. “Entering Miss South Africa was a decision rooted in growth,” she explains. Having never participated before, she chose it because it would stretch her. “I believe growth requires placing yourself in environments that stretch you, and this journey certainly does that. Nothing ever comes from a place of comfort.”

Over the years, she says, the programme has earned a reputation as a powerful women empowerment platform. “I’ve experienced why,” she adds. It develops practical leadership, resilience, communication skills, emotional intelligence, and presence, challenging participants to refine how they show up. For Angelique, the experience aligns naturally with her entrepreneurial journey, sharpening her confidence and voice while creating meaningful visibility for the ventures she and her husband have built. “Ultimately, this is about becoming a stronger, more capable version of myself and allowing that growth to ripple into everything I build.”

Women in Business South Africa: Visibility and Responsibility

In the spirit of International Women’s Day, Angelique reflects on being part of the growing force of women in business South Africa. “Being a woman in business today means we have evolved and made ourselves visible,” she says. Where women once worked quietly behind the scenes, they now lead openly, building companies, employing people, and influencing industries.

“We show younger generations that ambition and femininity are not opposites.” With that visibility comes responsibility: “The way we lead matters. The standards we set matter. The example we model matters.” And perhaps most powerfully: “The sun shines over all of us. There is space. There is opportunity. One woman’s success does not diminish another’s.”

Rooted in Pretoria’s Community

Like many women-owned businesses Pretoria is proud of, A’MI Collectif has grown through community. “Our customers, friends, and suppliers have supported us from the beginning,” Angelique says. “They’ve trusted our vision, worn the pieces, shared the brand, and cheered us on.” Pretoria women understand refinement, value community, and show up for one another. “This business exists because of those women. A’MI Collectif is not just serving this community, it is a product of it.”

Advice for Aspiring Female Entrepreneurs

When asked what she would say to women who feel afraid to begin, she does not hesitate. “Do it. Seriously, do it. You’ll never feel ready.” “Business is demanding. It tests your resilience, discipline, and patience. But it also gives you something incredibly valuable: freedom. Freedom to build. Freedom to create impact. Freedom to design life intentionally. And that kind of freedom? It’s priceless.”

What’s Next for Angelique and A’MI Collectif

Looking ahead, her focus is clear: refine the brand’s position in the premium space, strengthen its digital presence, and develop a locally designed and manufactured collection. “Producing locally is important to me,” she explains. “It’s not just about control over quality. It’s about impact.” Growth, for Angelique, is about building something sustainable, both commercially and socially, while creating opportunities and supporting local skills.

What excites her most? “That this is still just the beginning.” Beyond the business plans, she is embracing the Miss South Africa journey as a season of growth. It stretches her in unexpected ways, and that growth filters back into how she leads and builds. For Angelique, the next chapter is not just about expansion, but about becoming stronger in the process.

Angelique represents the kind of woman shaping Pretoria’s entrepreneurial landscape, leading with clarity, discipline, and intention. She shows that women-owned businesses in the city are built not only on ambition but on the courage to keep growing, and we look forward to seeing where Angelique’s vision takes her next.
