One of the most anticipated events at the University of Johannesburg, the Annual Dean's Concert is back with all the glitz and musical prowess. This year's Dean's Concert, organised by (UJ) Arts & Culture, a branch of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), and hosted by Professor Federico Freschi, Executive Dean of FADA, takes on particular significance as it commemorates the 20th anniversary of the University of Johannesburg. Make sure to mark 1 November 2025 on your calendars and get your tickets now.

About The Annual Dean's Concert

In order to support a bursary fund that Professor Freschi established to assist academically deserving students with limited financial resources, the annual Dean's Concert has brought together renowned musicians with up-and-coming talent since 2016.

Renowned pianist and composer Christopher Duigan and Professor Freschi, who is lovingly referred to as the "Singing Dean," once again collaborate on the musical direction of the event, which includes both beloved favourites and some new voices.

The Musical Talent

Yolisa Ngwexana, a soprano from Cape Town, joins Professor Freschi in a selection of arias and duets from Verdi's La Traviata, adding a touch of international glamour to the Dean's Concert. Ngwexana has become a rising star in opera houses across three continents thanks to these works, which are praised for their emotional intensity and beautiful lyrics.

With London's English National Opera, Ngwexana is currently performing as Clorinda in Rossini's La Cenerentola. Her journey demonstrates a significant transformation in her artistic abilities. She switched to music after graduating with honours from North West University in 2022 after receiving her degree in biotechnology from Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2018. Since then, Ngwexana has advanced her opera career by playing a variety of parts both domestically and overseas.

Without the UJ Choir, who have won numerous awards, no Dean's Concert would be complete. A pillar of UJ Arts & Culture, the choir's exceptional vocal range and adaptable voices have come to represent the university's musical prowess. They bring their signature repertoire, which flawlessly transitions from African to Western choral music, to the stage once more.

"What makes this annual concert truly special is how it embodies our belief in FADA and UJ that great art and great purpose are inseparable. As we celebrate the University of Johannesburg's 20th anniversary, this concert reminds us how far we've come in nurturing artistic talent. We are a community that ensures that artistic and academic potential can flourish regardless of economic circumstance,” states Professor Freschi.

When audiences experience the soaring melodies of Verdi alongside our talented students and distinguished guests, they become part of something larger," he notes.

I am delighted to return as musical director for this year’s annual Dean’s Concert at UJ,” says Christopher Duigan, who is considered one of South Africa's leading concert pianists and has performed extensively with all major South African orchestras and across national and international festivals. “It is always an evening of music that uplifts, inspires and moves and I am looking forward to collaborating with Yolisa and Prof Freschi in the Verdi arias and duets. Beyond the performance, this really is an evening that honours Prof Freschi’s commitment to supporting students,” he continues.

What Else To Expect

In addition to the concert, there will be a sale of artwork by both established and up-and-coming artists, which will help the fund even more.
