Trail Blazing in the Capital: Pretoria’s Top Hikes

Kim Brown / November 11, 2025

Pretoria is blessed with patches of nature that feel a world away from the bustle of the city, yet are close enough for a spontaneous afternoon escape. Whether you’re a casual stroller, a keen walker or somewhere in between, there are trails around our capital that will leave you refreshed, inspired and ready to breathe deeply. Here are our favourite hiking destinations in and around Pretoria, each with its own charm and suitability for different fitness levels.

Hazeldean Valley Trails

Hazeldean Valley Trails is a fabulous choice for walkers of all levels, from a gentle breeze to a good stretch under the trees. This bushveld‑style trail network offers a huge variety of loops, making it easy to pick something that suits your energy level.

You’ll find marked loops ranging from 2km to 49km, and everything in-between.

The terrain is generally gentle; ideal for beginners or families wanting something a little more open than a city park.

Tip: Aim for early morning so you can enjoy the fresh bushveld air and maybe stop in afterwards at Geground for a coffee or the Cowhouse for something scrumptious. Also good to keep your dog on a leash if you’re bringing a four‑legged companion.

Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve

The Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve is the kind of place where you can take a deep breath of fresh air, wander under shady trees, spot some game and just enjoy being outdoors. The walking routes here vary from about 1.5 km to 4.6 km, meaning you can tailor your outing to how energetic you feel.

For beginners and families this is a great start: well‑marked paths, manageable distances, and the possibility of spotting springbok, zebra, impala or duiker when you’re lucky. It’s relaxed, friendly, and you don’t need to have hiking boots (though decent shoes always help).

Tip: Go early in the morning to savour the cool air and avoid midday heat. Bring water and a hat, even on mild days the Pretoria sun can sneak up on you.

Groenkloof Nature Reserve

A true classic for Pretoria walkers, Groenkloof offers something for almost every level. Located right in the city’s green belt, the reserve lays claim to several trails: a white‑trail that’s around 3.7 km (accessible and gentle), a red trail of about 5 km and a yellow trail stretching to roughly 10.5 km.

If you’re looking for a nature break without venturing too far, this is ideal. The terrain is varied but nothing too extreme on the shorter loops. For more experienced hikers, the 10 km option gives more elevation and scenic views. Wildlife sightings (including zebra!) make the walk all the more enjoyable.

Best for: those wanting a mid‑level walk with nature and city convenience. Bring along some snacks, take your time and stop for a rest if you like, the viewpoints make it worth it.

Hennops Hiking Trails

For a bit more of a nature‑escape feel, head to Hennops. The trails are set in a valley alongside the Hennops River, with a more rural atmosphere compared to the urban reserves. They offer walking routes of approximately 2 km (Dassie trail), 5 km (Zebra trail) and 10 km (Krokodilberg trail).

This is a brilliant pick if you’re comfortable walking a little further, or you’d like the option of a longer trek. The 5 km route suits most fitness levels with scenic variety. The 10 km is for when you’ve got the time and energy.

Insider tip: Keep an eye out for wildlife and bring sunscreen, some sections are exposed. Also check the trail status/fees ahead of time, as with any reserve.

Wonderboom Nature Reserve

A lesser‑known but delightful option, Wonderboom offers trails that are shorter and quite approachable, perfect for a gentle outing. The reserve is known for its ancient wild fig tree (the “Wonderboom”) and trails of 0.5 km, 1 km and 2.8 km are listed for the area.

Because the distances are modest, it’s an excellent choice for families with younger children, older walkers, or anyone wanting a relaxed nature walk. Add to that the intriguing history and the lovely views across the city and you have a mini‑adventure.

Don’t forget: Even on short walks bring water, comfortable shoes and maybe a camera. The views from the top of the hill are especially nice in the late afternoon.

Hedianga Farm

For those who want to take things up a notch (but not to extreme mountaineering levels), Hedianga Farm is a strong candidate. Located on the Bronberg side of the Magaliesberg, this trail network offers a mix of rocky terrain, vistas and varying levels of challenge.

Here you’ll find trails that are more rugged than the typical nature reserve outing, but still very manageable if you’re comfortable with a bit more under‑foot variation. It’s also dog friendly with designated times, which is great if you have a four‑legged walking companion.

Heads‑up: Some parts aren’t well shaded, so plan accordingly (sun‑hat, water, and maybe earlier in the day). Also check which trail you’re doing and what distance you’re comfortable with.

Faerie Glen Nature Reserve

Tucked in the east of Pretoria, Faerie Glen Nature Reserve offers a more tranquil, less‑crowded alternative for those seeking an easy to moderate walk. It’s particularly well suited for families or anyone looking for a relaxed outing rather than a challenge. One writer listed it as one of the accessible beginner trails in the Pretoria area.

While exact trail distances aren’t always published, you’ll find gentle slopes, lovely bushveld scenery and a chance to immerse in some peace. Because it’s slightly off the main “tourist trail”, it feels more local and less busy. A nice bonus.

Tip: Go early morning to enjoy cooler air and perhaps more bird activity, and bring sun protection since parts are open.

Klapperkop Nature Reserve

This reserve sits just south of Pretoria and gives a slightly more elevated experience with lovely views of the city. It’s still accessible for casual walkers but if you choose the higher parts you’ll get a modest “work‑out” feel.

Being less frequented than some of the “classic” reserves, Klapperkop offers a good balance. Nature, fresh air, great outlooks, and the feeling of being away from urban buzz.

Tip: Stick to daylight hours and choose the more moderate paths if you’re with family or newer to hiking. Good shoes recommended, as some ground may be uneven.

Final Walking Tips for Pretoria Hikers

  • Always check the park’s opening hours and entry fees ahead of your visit. Some reserves have strict gate times. For example, Moreleta Kloof’s gates close at 18:00 with last entry at 17:00.
  • Wear shoes with good grip. Even “easy” trails can have roots, rocks or uneven terrain.
  • Bring water and a snack. Many reserves don’t have shops mid‑trail.
  • Early morning or late afternoon are our favourite times: fewer people, cooler air, better light for photos.
  • Respect the bush: stay on marked routes, don’t feed or chase wildlife, take your litter home.
  • If you’re new to hiking, start shorter (1 – 3 km) and build up. The reserves above give excellent options to match your fitness.
