Many people think of Jacarandas and Union Buildings when visiting Pretoria, but there is so much more to this vibrant city! Here’s what to do in Pretoria in order to ensure the perfect weekend in Pretoria:
Day 1: Culture, Coffee and Cocktails
Start slowly with a good coffee. Pretoria is filled with design-forward cafés, artisan bakeries and specialty coffee spots that ensure that your mornings start without too much of a rush.
If you’re a morning person, why not start outside with a neighbourhood walk and then pop in at the nearest coffee spot? Waterkloof, for instance, boasts various options, including La Coco C and Moka. Groenkloof is known for its popular Motherland Coffee, whilst Brooklyn Square brags with a stunning Seattle Coffee Co. To the north, Colbyn’s got a couple of quaint little coffee stops too, including Nush.
From there, why not opt for some antique browsing. The city is filled with special gems and if you’re one for antiques – whether it be furniture or fashion – you’re sure to find a few special places along your route.
Of course, bookstores are also a morning must-do. Whilst Exclusive Books at Menlyn Park and Brooklyn Mall is always a fan favourite, there are also a couple of book fairs to keep track of, as well as some intimate, independent bookstores like The Book Keeper Shop. There’s also Magic Tree Books in Pierneef Street – another gem worth checking out if you’re a book lover like us.
As the morning progresses, perhaps take a stroll at the Union Buildings (definitely worth a visit, especially during the Jacaranda season from October to November). The majestic Voortrekker Monument is also worth a stop – be sure to ask about the architecture and the history around it. Of course, the Pretoria National Botanical Garden is also worth a visit, especially if you’re a nature lover and appreciate a lesson or two about local flora.
Lunch Time in Pretoria: Wine & Long Tables
Pretoria is a city where one needs to make the most of city spaces where you can breathe. Think wine bars, farm-style lunch spots, owner-run restaurants and bistros with good interiors. Hazelwood is probably your best bet, with The Village being filled with owner-run eateries where one can meet the makers of the dishes that get served.
From there, head on over to a couple of concept stores or local designers for a cultural experience. We absolutely love The Space (local designer apparel), Big Blue (quirky fashion at Menlyn Park and Brooklyn Mall) and Muse (a lifestyle boutique at Shere Lifestyle Centre).
An Evening Elevated with Dining and Cocktails
Dinner might just be the highlight of the day, with Pretoria’s various top-quality dining options. From fine dining and modern South African cuisine to steakhouses with style and chef’s tasting menus, you’re bound to find something to your liking. Whilst it’s not typical South African cuisine, you can’t go wrong with Capito!’s Italian cuisine. But, if you’re looking for local flavour, look no further than Fermier for fine dining or SMOKE for fire-inspired dishes.
Of course, that doesn’t have to be the end of the day. The City of Jacarandas offers a plethora of cocktail bars, speakeasies, rooftop bars and late-night dessert stops. Think Goat Bar, The Tasting Room and Aroma – to name a few.
Day 2: Wellness, Markets & Wine
For your second day in Pretoria, pull in and join the community! Join a park run at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden or at the Voortrekker Monument and see what the hype is all about. Or, visit the Pretoria Boeremark, where locals buy their local produce for the week. Of course, an outdoor brunch is also not a bad idea and with the city’s weather being some of the best in the country, this is something you can pretty much enjoy all year round! Many restaurants in Pretoria boast outdoor seating, so you won’t struggle to find a spot that tickles your fancy. We’d recommend looking into Blos Café for its open-air deck, Aroma Gourmet Coffee Roastery for an outdoor city vibe, Afro-Boer for its lush gardens, kiddies’ playground (and interesting chickens) and Sorcery Coffee Roasters – Ruins.
Slow Sundays: A Taste of the Countryside
Finally, slow down by taking a drive to the outskirts of Pretoria. The city is located close to places like Hartbeespoort, Cullinan, Muldersdrift and more, which could add an additional touch to your 48 hours in Pretoria. Whether you’d like to taste artisanal beers, do a Cullinan day trip, go horse riding or taste cheese at Van Gaalen Cheese Farm, there’s lots to choose from if you’re keen on a short drive.
Wind-Down at Sunset in Pretoria
If you’d like to end off your 48 hours in Pretoria with the perfect sunset, we’ve got some suggestions. Pretoria feels softer at sunset, especially at these spots:
- The View Rooftop Bar
- Skyline Rooftop Restaurant, bar and Lounge
- Date View on Pikkewyn Avenue
- Fort Klapperkop
- The Voortrekker Monument
- Johann Rissik Drive
Well, there you have it. 48 Hours in Pretoria with lots of proof! You’re welcome.
