Malo and the Moon Maiden narrates the tale of Malo the Clown and his unwavering devotion to the celestial Moon-Maiden, Melodia Luna. Against the backdrop of a once-famous circus that has since faded. Slapstick humor, fanciful acrobatics, poignant storytelling, and breathtaking aerial artistry are all combined in this poetic journey. The dreamlike world will enchant audiences of all ages. In a place where love is more radiant than the stars, there is a vibrant parade of clowns and acts that defy gravity.
The Talented Cast
Daniel Buckland plays Malo in the production of 9 Artists, giving the bereaved clown nuance and charm. Together with Claudia Moruzzi as the luminous Melodia Luna, whose heavenly beauty enchants. As the malevolent ringmaster Ratchett who dares to stand between these two loves, Yahto Kraft revels in his role. A dynamic chorus of circus performers, including singers, dancers, and aerial artists, backs the cast, weaving a tapestry of magic and movement.

Director Janice Honeyman's unmatched skill at creating visually stunning and emotionally impactful productions is tapped into in Malo and the Moon Maiden. Honeyman, who is well-known for her groundbreaking pantomimes at the Johannesburg Theatre and her critically acclaimed productions of Mamma Mia! and The Color Purple, lends Malo and the Moon Maiden a poetic beauty reminiscent of Marc Chagall's romantic circus paintings. Her reputation as a visionary storyteller has been cemented by her international credits, which include productions at the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the London Hampstead Theatre, and the Lincoln Center in New York.
Honeyman summarises the show for us; “Malo and the Moon Maiden is a whimsical tale of two people from different worlds, who find each other through love and understanding, respect and harmony. And they need to make their different backgrounds match and meld if they are to find happiness with each other.”
She continues; “This circus tale – a rollicking adventure filled with intrigue – has something for everyone and carries the whole family along on a funfair ride of music, laughter, poignant sadness and jollity, giving you scenes of comedy, conflict and good cheer. Wessel Odendaal's original score creates an enthralling aural landscape. From lighthearted circus tunes to ethereally lovely themes, it enhances the emotional depth of the production. The story's balance of happiness and melancholy is expertly complemented by Odendaal's music. Wilhelm Disbergen's lighting and set design turns The Cirk into a fantastical circus setting. featuring an elevated stage, a central ring, and a moonlit sky that inspires awe and nostalgia. A constantly shifting background of stars, heavens, and circus life is produced by Disbergen's creative use of The Cirk's equipment.
