Hidden Gems in Pretoria You Must Visit

Kim Brown / November 20, 2025

Pretoria is well known for its sweeping boulevards, colonial architecture and that signature blanket of purple jacaranda blossoms each spring. But beyond the major tourist trails lies a softer, more intimate side of the city. Places that locals may still pass by without a second glance, yet which are full of character, history and tranquillity. We’ve pulled together ten hidden gems in and around Pretoria worth discovering. These are spots your friends may not know, but which are prime for an afternoon outing, photo stop, or relaxed exploration.

Trent Art Gallery

Tucked away in Waterkloof, the Trent Art Gallery is an intimate gallery space that showcases South African creative talent in a more relaxed, less tourist‑crowded setting.

Why it’s a gem: It’s for the art‑lover in you, offering a creative escape from the usual landmarks and letting you engage with the local art scene in a personal way.

Tip: Check their schedule for opening nights or exhibitions, then pair your visit with brunch or coffee nearby in the suburb.

Pierneef’s Kraal at Lynnwood Manor

Pierneef’s Kraal is the former homestead of celebrated South African landscape artist, J.H. Pierneef. Set within garden grounds, it offers serenity, heritage, and art in one.

Why it’s a gem: It’s a mix of peaceful garden escape, historic house and artistic heritage. Not your standard “go‑to” destination for visitors but perfect for locals seeking something quiet and meaningful.

Tip: Visit mid‑morning for coffee in the garden and wander slowly through its historic corners. A good book or sketch pad might not go amiss either.

Magnolia Dell Park

Magnolia Dell Park is a leafy, lesser‑known gem in the heart of the city. With a stream, dam (boasting a Peter Pan statue), towering trees and the monthly flea market, this park has a quiet, gracious atmosphere.

Few realise how easily accessible it is, yet it feels like you’ve slipped into a secluded hidden garden in between the rush of Pretoria.

Why it’s a gem: Because it gives city‑residents a chance to unwind, picnic, stroll and simply be in green space without venturing far.

Tip: Visit on the first Sunday of the month for the flea market.

Herbert Baker Street

Herbert Baker Street is one of Pretoria’s most photogenic but lesser‑visited spots. During Spring, you’ll find the remarkable bloom of white jacaranda trees blended between the common purple trees. It's a rare botanical twist.

It is said that the street is ranked fourth in a global study of “most eye‑catching streets”.

Why it’s a gem: It offers a rare Pretoria photo‑moment. Rare white blooms, calm suburbia, elegance all around.

Tip: Plan your visit in October/November when the Jacarandas are at their best. Drive in, park at the top and stroll down.

Erasmus Castle

Perched on a hill, Erasmus Castle (also known as Die Spookhuis) is a striking Victorian Art‑Nouveau mansion built between 1892 and 1903. Its architecture is a rare breed in Pretoria. Think turrets, sweeping gables, original detailing, and a tower that catches the setting sun in dramatic fashion. The building was constructed for the Erasmus family on their farm “Garsfontein 374”. What gives it extra charm (and a little shiver) are the layers of story and myth. Ghost‑hunting enthusiasts have mentioned hearing footsteps in empty halls and lights flickering. But how can something so beautiful be haunted?

Why it’s a gem: You’ll find more than just a pretty façade. It’s a piece of Pretoria’s past, layered with architectural whimsy, social history, and myth.

Tip: It's privately owned and not open to the public, so a drive‑by at golden hour gives excellent photo‑ops. If you’re lucky, you might catch a guided visit or event there.

Yadah Castle

In Doornkloof East, you’ll find Yadah Castle. This is a destination that mixes Turkish‑style design, restaurant dining, hammam spa vibes, and an event space wrapped in “castle” walls and towers. Behind those turrets lies something unusual for Pretoria: Middle Eastern cuisine, ornate interiors, mood lighting, and a sense of stepping away from urban routine. Whether you arrive for a meal, spa experience or function, the setting elevates the ordinary outing.

Why it’s a gem: It offers an exotic twist within the city. It's a chance to treat yourself somewhere different without leaving Pretoria.

Tip: Even if you’re not booking a full event, choose dinner time and request a table near a window or terrace. The ambience gives you the “castle‑escape” feel without a long drive.

The Wonderboom Nature Reserve

You wouldn't expect to find a nature reserve right in the middle of a bustling suburb, would you? Well, the Wonderboom Nature Reserve is just the place, located a few metres away from Wonderboom Junction. What makes this spot unique and a hidden gem is the fact that it houses a 1000 year old fig tree that's said to have once been big enough to shade 1 000 people at once or 22 ox wagons with 20 oxen in front of each. However, this tree is much smaller, assumed to be due to a devastating fire in 1870. Other than the impressive fig tree, there's also a fort that was built during the Second Boere War, waterfalls, wildlife and a cave to explore.

Why it’s a gem: Many head for the major reserves further afield, but this one allows nature, quiet, and heritage within a shorter drive.

Tip: Pack a picnic, head in early afternoon, and stay until sunset if you can. The view and tranquillity make it worthwhile.

It's a refreshing and hidden spot full of plants, waterfalls, sounds of nature, safari themed furnishings and amazing cuisine and drinks! You don't need to leave the city to enjoy a quick getaway in the middle of nature. It also doubles as a function venue for all of your special occasions. You may have driven past this spot on the way to The Grove without even realising! But we highly suggest a visit.

Why it’s a gem: For when you want to feel like you’ve escaped the city without actually driving far — and the meal becomes part of the outing, not just the stop.

Tip: Go for a weekend brunch, arrive early if you want a shady outdoor table. If you’re with little ones, ask about the play area or gardens. They’ll appreciate the space to roam.
