Join the Glass Recycling Challenge This November

Kim Brown / November 19, 2025

The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) is inviting South Africans to participate in the #GlassRecyclingChallenge 2025, which will take place throughout November. The objective is to gather 280 tonnes of glass in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town in order to demonstrate how modest, routine acts may have a significant national impact.

The outstanding momentum of earlier campaigns, in which thousands of South Africans got their hands dirty, filled glass banks, and shown that recycling can be enjoyable and significant, is built upon in this year's challenge. Communities, schools, restaurants, and corporations came together to recycle hundreds of tonnes of glass bottles and jars in 2024 as part of the challenge. This year, TGRC wants to break that record and encourage even more involvement.

One Simple Act, A Massive Impact

Because glass is completely recyclable and can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality, it is one of the most environmentally friendly packaging materials available. However, millions of bottles still wind up in landfills each year, frequently as a result of people's ignorance of how simple recycling is.

By demonstrating how simple it is to make a difference, the #GlassRecyclingChallenge seeks to alter that. Find your local glass recycling bank here to take part in the thousands of public glass banks found in shopping malls, educational institutions, and community centres across the country. Just gather your used glass jars and bottles and deliver them to the glass bank that is closest to you. Every donation advances your city's position on the leaderboard and advances the nation's sustainability objectives.

Putting Fun Into Recycling

TGRC is providing R5 000 spot prizes to participants who use the hashtag #GlassRecyclingChallenge on social media to highlight their recycling achievements in order to keep things interesting. Every post promotes awareness and inspires others to get involved, whether it's a unique snapshot taken at your neighbourhood glass bank or a family recycling trip.

Regional competitiveness will be sparked by TGRC's sharing of updates and city-by-city totals. Last year, Johannesburg was the lone contender, but this year, Cape Town and Pretoria are committed to winning the title in 2025.

Turning Bottles Into Opportunity

Beyond its positive effects on the environment, glass recycling is essential to South Africa's circular economy and sustains thousands of jobs. Glass collected through buy-back centres and public glass recycling banks supports collectors and business owners who make money by trading recyclable materials.

By taking part, the public is supporting local recycling networks, reducing waste, and creating jobs in addition to safeguarding the environment. Each bottle counts.

Shabeer Jhetam, CEO of TGRC the national body responsible for glass recycling, says, “Recycling glass is one of the simplest and most effective ways we can protect our environment and support sustainable communities. Every jar or bottle recycled goes back into the production cycle, saving energy, conserving natural resources, and reducing landfill waste. Through this challenge, we’re showing that sustainability isn’t just a corporate goal. It’s something every South African can do from their own home.

How To Join The Challenge

  • Recycle your glass at a TGRC public glass bank.
  • Find your nearest glass recycling bank here
  • Share your recycling journey on social media using #GlassRecyclingChallenge for a chance to win spot prizes.
  • Encourage your friends, colleagues, schools, or community groups to get involved. Together, we can make a bigger impact.

This November, TGRC invites all South Africans to pause before they throw away a bottle or jar. Each recycled container is a small but powerful step towards a cleaner, greener, more sustainable South Africa. Let’s make 2025 the year we shatter records.
