When their 1997 and 1998 singles, Palafala and Shibobo, each sold over 100 000 copies, the trio of Tokollo Tshabalala, Kabelo Mabalane, and Zwai Bala became the best-selling Kwaito band in South African music history, making TKZee a well-known brand throughout Africa. As TKZee's popularity grew, they combined a variety of musical styles, including kwaito, hip-hop, classical, house, and gospel, to create what became known as "Guz" music, which became an immediate hit with young South African music lovers. Their record of winning five South African Music Awards in a single year for their 1998 album Halloween lasted for more than ten years. The group reformed for the 2009 album Coming Home after splitting up in 2002 to pursue solo careers. They were one of just six musical acts to represent Africa at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony in Johannesburg. The legacy of TKZee continues with longtime friends and fellow band members Kabelo Mabalane and Zwai Bala following the untimely death of Tokollo Tshabalala in 2022.
