Craving Cocoa? Here’s Where to Find Pretoria’s Best Hot Chocolate

Lerato Maimela / April 13, 2026

Some days, coffee just doesn't satisfy. When the Pretoria winter hits, and you're craving something thicker, richer, and a bit more indulgent, hot chocolate rises to the top. These five spots in the city each offer something unique, from smooth house blends to full chocolate experiences you can plan an afternoon around.

Goddess Cafe

Goddess Cafe focuses on indulgence, and their hot chocolate reflects this. It is rich and smooth, made from real cocoa and coconut oil, fitting perfectly with a menu that takes dessert-style drinks seriously. The Waterkloof and Rietondale locations have gained strong reputations for their atmosphere, featuring outdoor seating under trees and a crowd that enjoys lingering. The colorful lattes and cakes attract attention, but the hot chocolate stands out.

Visit them in Waterkloof, Rietondale, Southdowns, and Watermeyer Park.

Sorcery Coffee Roasters

Sorcery is mostly known for specialty coffee, and rightly so, yet their Double Dark Chocolate has its own loyal fans. It’s smooth and richly flavored, meant to be savored. The Ruins branch in Wapadrand is the most popular, nestled in the Bronberg Mountain Range with views over Pretoria East that make the drive worth it. Pets are welcome on a leash, payment is card only, and no bookings are needed. They open Monday to Friday at 8 am and weekends at 9 am.

Echt Coffee

Echt offers a straightforward approach and executes it well. The hot chocolate is part of a drinks menu focused on consistency and quality, served by a team that genuinely cares about the experience. The Pierre van Ryneveld branch attracts morning runners and weekend visitors, while the Centurion branch on Clifton Avenue has a similar community feel. They operate Monday to Saturday from 6 am and Sundays from 7 am, making it one of the first options in the city for a warm drink on a chilly morning.

Plato Coffee

Plato's hot chocolate costs R89 and is part of a drinks menu that already has a loyal customer base across its Pretoria branches. The Waterkloof Glen and Faerie Glen locations are particularly popular, creating a relaxed environment perfect for a slow morning. The house blend coffee often steals the spotlight, but the hot chocolate is worth a try, especially on an overcast Pretoria morning when you might want something without an espresso shot. They open Monday to Saturday from 6 am and on Sundays from 7 am.

Abantu Coffee

Abantu is a community coffee brand that exceeds expectations for its size. Their white hot chocolate is often praised by regulars as the reason they keep returning. The Garsfontein branch on Winifred Yell Street and the Waterkloof branch on Cliff Avenue maintain the same friendly atmosphere that the brand is known for. Small, relaxed, and genuinely good, it’s the kind of coffee spot that feels personal instead of polished.
