Nothing hits nostalgia quite like that buttery, irresistible smell when you walk into the movies. But instead of settling for the usual cinema box, we went out to explore Pretoria’s popcorn scene beyond the theatre doors.
From caramel-coated jars to chocolate-topped slabs and even popcorn-inspired ice cream, this classic snack has been reimagined in surprisingly creative ways, just in time for Popcorn Lover’s Day 2026, happening on 13 March. We looked at where to find artisanal and gourmet popcorn in Pretoria and discovered that this humble snack has become something far more exciting than we expected.
Popcorn may be synonymous with movie nights, but in Pretoria it has quietly evolved into something far more indulgent. Across the city, Pretorians have found a new love for popcorn beyond the cinema. Think bold flavours, beautiful packaging, and creative twists. It’s become part of the growing Pretoria foodie experience, and we want to show you exactly where to get it.
Where to Find the Best Gourmet Popcorn in Pretoria
Maverick & Jane – Popcorn, but Make it Fancy
Maverick & Jane have taken popcorn to a completely different level. Think of the nostalgic crunch you already love, then imagine it paired with flavours you wouldn’t normally expect.
Their popcorn jars come in options like Famous Caramel, Hazelnut Rocher, Birthday Cake, Milk Tart and Burfee Kettle Korn. It’s the kind of snack you open “just for a taste” and suddenly realise half the jar is gone.
Their range doesn’t stop there. Their Popcorn Slabs are quite something to experience: a thick layer of caramel popcorn topped with chocolate, featuring bold combinations like S’mores and Millionaire’s Shortbread. They look like something you’d gift, but we won’t judge if you keep one for yourself. If you prefer something closer to traditional kettle corn, they have that too with a little extra flair in flavours like Sweet Chilli (sweet, salty, with a bit of fire).
Go ahead and explore this delectable popcorn yourself. You can find it at Kwikspar Erasmuskloof, soon at Hazelwood’s The Pantry, and online.

An Easy Gourmet Popcorn Idea to Try at Home
If these artisanal and gourmet popcorn spots in Pretoria have inspired you and your mouth is already watering, here’s a super simple way to recreate a little of that magic at home this Popcorn Lover’s Day 2026.
If you’re feeling brave, you can absolutely try making your own caramel from scratch… but we’re going to leave the complicated sugar work to the experts and keep this one simple.

You’ll need:
- 1 bowl freshly popped popcorn
- 1 cup mini marshmallows
- 2 tbsp butter
- A handful of your favourite sweets (Smarties, Astros, chopped chocolate, sprinkles, etc.)
Method:
Melt the butter and marshmallows together in a pan over low heat (or in the microwave in short bursts), stirring until smooth and sticky. Pour over your popcorn and gently mix until coated. While it’s still warm, scatter over your favourite sweets and sprinkles. Let it set slightly, or dive in while it’s gooey.
