A Worldly Weekend in Pretoria: Plan a Two-Day Escape That Transports You

Lerato Maimela / March 16, 2026

Written by: Renate Engelbrecht

If you’re a keen traveller, you probably know the burning feeling of wanderlust quite well. Unfortunately, we can’t always just hop onto a plane and travel to the destinations we dream about. We can, however, explore those destinations through culture and cuisine that have been planted in our own cities. Whether you’d like to be transported to Greece, explore Parisian alleys or discover secret gems in India, here’s our guide to a worldly weekend in Pretoria:

Paris in Pretoria: C’est Parfait!

With Pretoria being the administrative capital of South Africa, the city is home to many embassies, including the French Embassy. With that comes many events, like the upcoming Alliance Francaise Francophonie Festival, where you can join them for exciting film screenings.

The Alliance Francaise also offers French classes for adults (starting the week of 23 March 2026). During these classes, you can learn French in a dynamic and friendly group setting – perfect for both beginners and more advanced learners.

Alternatively, explore France’s flavours at La Madeleine where Chef-Patron Daniel Leusch and his wife, Karine serve French and Belgian cuisine in the tree-lined Lynnwood Ridge neighbourhood.

Another restaurant that celebrates French cuisine is Brasserie de Paris – located in a historic house in Waterkloof Ridge. Blending local architecture with French (and local) wine and cooking techniques straight from France, it boasts a unique experience for those dreaming of a Parisian summer.

Gather for a Greek Celebration as Part of Your Worldly Weekend in Pretoria

Pretoria is rich in Greek experiences with several highly regarded Greek restaurants and cultural spots to explore. In fact, the capital has a strong Greek community that brings wonderful culinary adventures and Mediterranean hospitality to the city.

Filos, located at the Hellenic Community centre, offers authentic, homemade Greek and Cypriot cuisine in a homely atmosphere. They also boast imported deli items often used in traditional family recipes, so be sure to stop by.

Prosopa Restaurant, run by Chef-Patron Dino Fagas, is a favourite for locals, offering high-end Greek cuisine, cleverly paired with exquisite local wines. It’s a sophisticated setting perfect for celebratory dinners and will instantly transport you to Crete.

Spice Things Up with Indian Experiences in Pretoria

Learn to cook Indian food from the experienced team at Razia’s Deli. Located in Nuwe Hoop Street, Maroelana, Razia’s Deli is home to the beloved Razia’s Pickle – a mother-daughter business specializing in authentic Indian-style homemade sauces, pickles and spice mixes. Apart from their unique, homemade Indian delicacies, they also sell frozen samosas and rotis, as well as other proudly local artisanal items. They use family recipes passed down through generations to make their products, ensuring genuine Indian flavours - an experience you don’t want to miss.

Geet Restaurant

Often referred to as one of the best Indian restaurants in South Africa, Geet Indian Restaurant - a family-run restaurant - offers a truly authentic Indian experience. The menu that owner, Gita has created is unique, with meal options that are based on Indian philosophies. How fitting then that the word, Geet, also means melodious poem? Think natural, seasonal flavours enhanced by classic Indian cooking techniques, with menu selections including kebabs and curries that will leave you wanting more.

Immerse Yourself in the Turkish Culture

Yadah Castle has become known as the ultimate Turkish experience to be had in Pretoria. In fact, it’s a tribute to the beauty of Turkiye, inviting you into what feels like the vibrant streets of this popular international destination. The architectural marvel – located just off the R21 – boasts breathtaking Pretoria views and lasting impressions, featuring an award-winning Turkish Restaurant, A’la Turka, and a Hammam spa.

Located in Centurion, the 100% Halaal Buyuk Chamlija Socio Eco Village invites visitors to explore its grounds and indulge in delicious Turkish cuisine in a calm environment. It’s home to an array of farm animals, as well as a Bird Park and Sanctuary.

They often host events like the recent Cherry & Berry Festival and the upcoming Pomegranate (NAR) Festival (26 – 29 March 2026). For the latter, expect fresh pomegranates and seasonal produce, a village market with local stalls, Turkish and Mediterranean flavours, a peaceful, family-friendly farm experience and the beauty of a typical Pretorian autumn day.

A Worldly Weekend in Pretoria

Clearly, there’s no need to travel too far for you to have a worldly weekend in Pretoria. Gather your friends and explore the flavours of France, the culture of Crete and the tastes of Turkey – all without even crossing the City of Jacarandas’ borders.
