By the time January rolls around, most budgets are feeling the pressure. Luckily, Pretoria has no shortage of places where you can slow down, enjoy the outdoors or entertain the family without reaching for your wallet. From scenic hikes, running routes and cycling trails to family-friendly parks, markets and cultural stops, this list proves you can stay entertained without spending a cent.

Irene Farm

Irene Farm is free to visit and feels like a welcome break from the city without having to travel far. Families can wander the grounds, watch the cows, spot ducks on the dam and encourage some unstructured play for kids on the jungle gyms and in the sandpits. Of course, there are restaurants and a deli on site, perfect for a relaxed bite while enjoying the farm atmosphere if you have some Rands to spare.

Pretoria Boeremark

The Pretoria Boeremark is an easy, budget-friendly way to spend a Saturday morning. Get there early and you’ll catch the market coming alive, with music, farm animals for the kids, and that unmistakable Pretoria buzz. Here, you can wander around without spending anything, or pick up something from the wide range of stalls if the budget allows. For many, this market is a Rand stretcher, with fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as meat and poultry at affordable prices. But, for a worry-free January filled with free things to do in Pretoria, this market offers ample space for kids to move around without having to be entertained with flashy toys or screens, making it a relaxed outing for friends and families alike.

Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve

Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve is one of those spots that makes you forget you’re still in the city and the bonus is that there is no admission fee. The reserve offers plenty of open space and well-marked trails for hiking, trail running, or a relaxed walk with the family. In addition, shady trees offer the ideal spots to pause under, and there is more than enough room for kids to run around freely. Keep an eye out for special discoveries as you walk the trails. Zebras, antelope and an array of bird species make appearances along the way, making this little city gem a must when it comes to free things to do in Pretoria.

Fishing at Struben Dam

Struben Dam is a quiet little spot in Pretoria, perfect for those in need of a waterside escape. With no entry fee, it’s perfect for a peaceful morning or afternoon by the water. Bring your own gear and try your luck at fishing, or simply enjoy some bird watching. If you plan to fish, a recreational permit is required, which you can easily apply for online.

Ludwig’s Roses

Ludwig’s Roses is a colourful little escape just outside Pretoria. Entrance, parking, the playground and even tractor train rides are all free. In fact, it’s a destination “true to the generous spirit of the rose.” The gardens are filled with rows and rows of roses to wander through. For those who still have some cents left to spend, there’s a lovely on-site restaurant and shop too. Whether you linger a little longer for a late lunch, just visit to let the kids play in nature, or simply stroll amongst the scent of roses, it’s no doubt that this can be one of the best worry-free, free days out in Pretoria.

Jan Cilliers Park

Jan Cilliers Park is popular among locals, whether it’s for a picnic, a slow walk, or just a bit of fresh air. The paved paths, outstretched lawns and shady spots make it easy to take the family, go for a solo walk (it’s located in a boomed-off area, which makes it safe), or meet a friend for a morning jog or some stretching. It’s a great place to enjoy nature and it won’t cost anything!
