Reviewing The Hyatt Regency Kitchen Party

The Hyatt Regency Johannesburg invited resident food journo Shawn Greyling to check out their oneNINEone restaurant's Kitchen Party – needless to say, he had a blast.

There's a trend sweeping through the wine stocks of upmarket Johannesburg hotels. They all seem to serve more than their fair share of Warwick wines. I first noticed this at a five-star hotel in Sandton, where waiters were pouring the stuff like it's going out of style. And why not? It's a beautiful range of wines. Case in point is Warwick's Trilogy Blend; imagine a beautiful Bordeaux but grown in South Africa... Buy it up before it's all sold out. I am willing to bet that it will turn into an investment wine, and at R350 a bottle it's worth it.

Anyway. We're not here to talk about Warwick's grapes but rather to take a look at the Hyatt Regency Rosebank's oneNINEone restaurant's Kitchen Parties – where they serve Warwick (see, I told you it's a trend, or their rep is on fire in Joburg at the moment). Every now and then the oneNINEone hosts a kitchen party where they invite guests to come and experience an open kitchen celebration of good food and great wine.

On this particular evening, the Hyatt's new chef de cuisine, Chef Xavier, pulled out the big guns. There were two slow-roasted pigs that were carved up, Japanese seafood kebabs with mushroom broth, a two-day smoked brisket and a vegan bowl filled with three-times fried potatoes, eggplant and special mayo. For dessert Chef Xavier and his team whipped up something called a millionaire's cheesecake, which is a baked chocolate cheesecake made with Lindt chocolate and topped with edible gold.

All of the food was served with an open bar of Warwick wines. The atmosphere was awesome and the restaurant was filled with cool and friendly people. What makes it so great is that everyone was there for the same reason – to have good food, drink great wine and hang out and meet new people. This is a perfect reflection of what oneNINEone is all about.

With that said, we'd also like to congratulate the Hyatt Regency Johannesburg's oneNINEone restaurant on winning best restaurant during Joburg Restaurant Week 2017 (for the 5th time) and for being nominated as the best performing restaurant in Johannesburg. Let's drink to that!

Keep an eye on the Facebook page to find out when the next one is taking place.
