Ginger Apple Moreletapark’s Hottest New Café

Ginger Apple Café is an edgy eatery that recently opened on the corner of Wekker and Rubinstein Drive opposite the Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve. On a mission to end culinary boredom, this unique café creates ever-evolving menus that definitely don’t conform to the usual kind café food. Check it out.

The name says it pretty well: Ginger Apple Café and Culinary Architects. The menu options available from this newly opened establishment are daringly original and downright delicious. Judging by the fact that the relatively large parking lot was packed at 11am on a Tuesday morning, it is safe to say Ginger Apple has quickly become a popular place to get together.

Situated in what probably used to be a typical spacious Moreletapark home, this revamped space has a Zen-like ambience when you arrive. The hanging greenery, shades of earthy grey, water features and simplistic décor create a calm culinary setting. Ginger Apple Café offers guests a choice of indoor or courtyard seating and there is also a small bar area near the entrance.

The breakfast menu is served until 11:30am and, as expected, we didn’t find the typical bacon and eggs options. The Chorizo Hash is served in an angular glass bowl and is a mouthwatering mixture of chorizo, peppers, mushrooms, fried potato and poached egg that’s topped off with a lemon and feta sauce. Other breakfast options available include a vegetarian version of eggs Benedict and a decadent serving of French toast stuffed with berries, mascarpone cheese and Nutella.

Lunch is served from 11:30am onwards. The pie of the day was a generous-sized chicken pie and even though the filling wasn’t the usual creamy texture, accompanied by a chunky mushroom sauce and crispy fries it turned out to be a very tasty meal. The Duck Salad and Thai Lettuce Cups add a distinct Asian flair to the lunch selection.

On the hot beverage menu there are no less than four types of hot chocolate from which to choose as well as silk bag and loose-leaf tea. Take a backseat coffee-lovers, Ginger Apple is any tepidophobe’s nirvana. The wine list is well rounded and there are a number of interesting cocktails available too.

The service at Ginger Apple Café is prompt and efficient but could probably do with a dash of friendliness.

The waiter mentioned that the dinner menu changes weekly and even though we haven’t had dinner here (yet!), the current evening menu boasts some tempting creations. With string lights and water features as a backdrop, if you’re seated in the courtyard, Ginger Apple Café looks like a promising date night venue.

The café is only one part of Ginger Apple Café and Culinary Architects’ food business.
