Blue Crane Sunday Lunch

Sunday lunch is usually a family affair synonymous with a hearty meal and relaxed surroundings – two things that the Blue Crane Restaurant’s Sunday Lunch Buffet offer in abundance. We recently reserved a table at this renowned restaurant and the experience didn’t disappoint. If you’re looking for a scrumptious buffet complemented by a calm and comfy setup, this is just the place.

The Blue Crane Restaurant and Bar is well known in the Pretoria dining scene for its one-of-a-kind location. Nestled inside the Austen Roberts Bird Sanctuary in Nieuw Muckleneuk, there’s an array of bird life around to appreciate while enjoying your meal. The dark wood furniture lends a sophisticated ambience to this restaurant while the thatch roofing, unassuming décor and surroundings keep it relaxed.

The restaurant has an open-air upper deck dining area, enclosed terrace seating on the ground floor and a private dining area all overlooking the pond and providing spectacular views of nature. The bench seating around the boma is closest to the spitbraai and serving area, which allows you to fully enjoy the laid-back, outdoor surroundings. Children can play on the jungle gym, get a closer look at the resident tortoise or enjoy the live entertainment provided by the cranes that lazily meander around the edge of the water.

The Sunday lunch menu changes seasonally but you can expect starter items like fried calamari strips and soup, followed by meaty mains including lamb from a sizzling spit, pork crackling, oxtail potjie, juicy chicken cutlets and freshly steamed veggies. The lavender-infused malva pudding is drizzled with homemade hot custard – only one of the items available on the dessert table – and decadently tops off this marathon meal. The Blue Crane boasts a decent wine list and all the usual beverages are available.

What works especially well at this established restaurant is the spacious setup: it allows ample waterfront views as well as plenty of child-friendly spaces, letting the little ones be little ones without disturbing the terrific tranquil setting. The friendly and efficient service make this an enjoyable family lunch.

The Blue Crane Sunday Lunch Buffet starts at 12:30 and is charged at R250 per person. There is also a Main Course Only option that is priced at R190 per person. Advance booking is recommended.
