Why We Love Moo-Town: Exploring Irene Village Mall

With the concrete and bronze sculpture of a cow lying on its back as its character trademark, Irene Village Mall shows visitors the 'udder' side of shopping. The paved walkways, tree-lined shopping streets and village square flair makes Moo-town feel more like a market rather than a mall. Here’s why we love coming here…

Irene Village Mall’s charming al fresco feel sets it apart from other Pretoria retail spaces. Add the ambiance of public installation art by renowned artist Angus Taylor and the sound of kid-friendly fountains and you’ll quickly experience the congeniality of this medium-sized mall that’s been nicknamed Moo-town. For nearly a decade now, this peaceful yet popular shopping spot has been the retail hub in the Irene area.

You’ll find a fair selection of dining options, such as Ocean Basket, Pizza e Vino, Karoo Cattle and Land, Rocomamas, Fegos (now open in the evenings) and Mythos, nestled around the ground-level fountains, with Mugg & Bean and Spur just around the corner. For something a little different, make your way past the clock tower and try the hole-in-the-wall coffee lounge Die Vurk, Farmstead Café or Memory Lane Frozen Yoghurt.

Except for all the usual anchors that include Woolies, Pick n Pay, Clicks, @Home, Truworths, Mr Price and Milady’s, you can also shop at smaller favourites such as Big Blue and Pringle. You’ll also find a couple of exclusive clothing boutiques like Mamilla Fashion and Blooming Gorgeous as well as a Kids Emporium store, Tall Stories (a second-hand book shop) and a delightful gift shop, Lindie Loe. Irene Village Mall also has a number of jewellers, salons, a pet shop, florist and a travel agency.

With plenty of live events and happenings taking place on a regular basis, there’s always something to do at Moo-town: catch a movie at Ster-Kinekor, located on the upper level, appreciate the installation art or simply watch the little ones enjoy the fountains while having a coffee. Keep an eye on Irene Village Mall social media for upcoming events such as the Choir Fest and the Clover Irene Race.

Bigger and better

Even though we don’t know exactly when it’s due to be completed, construction of the much-anticipated multi-million-rand expansion project has already begun. Watch this space…
